[ Because you linked it in his top-level, lemme break in his inbox with Nimona! This will come after the two armadas go to their different port cities. ]
Why did the pirate buy a seagull instead of a parrot?
I have to admit, I've never been all that great at telling jokes. My uncle is much more into theatrics and wit such as that. I wish I could be more like him.
Specifically a comedy show, I'm not too sure... As far as theatre shows go I'm sure there are such things. Or perhaps even a ship that travels while having performances aboard it.
[That would be amazing. A travelling ship-theatre?]
Likewise, if you are ever in need of ... well, I am no writer when it comes to jokes, but anything else... I can attempt to aid you.
[ As the stylus has been pointed out to Dion, he can pen the letter in his own hand. ]
Dear Joshua,
I hope your voyage across the sea finds you well. I will admit being at sea with nothing but water surrounding me has given me ample time to think, and the night time darkness without a light source, I've scarcely seen anything like it.
I appreciate your assistance before we departed, and your tea selection has been a slight balm to my nerves. I've managed to avoid any embarrassing incidents, at the very least.
I've been to Elah and come into possession of an interesting artifact, although I've not any idea what I should do with it.
Have you heard anything about our method of arrival? I have heard a theory about it being some sort of Rift, but alas, no one seems to know very much about this circumstance. At least, none that I've met. Perhaps you've had better luck?
[When Joshua received the handwritten note on his device he can't help but feel a small flicker of excitement in the center of his chest. He'll read it over carefully, perhaps a few times, before he replies just as Dion has.]
Dear Dion,
It's a relief to know that the tea has been serving you well. I've often thought about how you might be at sea with it or without it. If you are feeling better because of it then all the better.
Although, I am sorry to hear that you've had thoughts mounting due to the sea's silence. I'll admit, the sea and the waves have a way of making me feel melancholy as well. Perhaps it's but the atmosphere and the way the ocean clears your mind of other worries to focus on ones that are buried more deeply. If you wish to share your thoughts with me I would be more than willing to read and listen.
I would very much like to hear about what artifacts you might have found as well. I haven't come across anything that is particularly special yet but I have heard of daggers that can sing and gloves that allow the wearer to carry heavier objects than they might expect. Isn't that a marvel...?
As for the rifts, I have made a few notes of my own. It appears that the rifts are random and can appear at any time and in any place. Others from worlds unlike our own can be pulled to this one through these rifts but there is no understanding of how we may return through them. At least that I know of right now.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you again, Joshua Rosfield.
[Which includes a small flourish of red like a feather underneath his name.]
I am ever so grateful that you helped. I fear it would be much more difficult without the tea, but at the very least it has been helping somewhat.
The sea is vast, the darkness of night is somewhat comforting and disconcerting at the same time and it gives me far too much time to think, I must admit.
As much as I wish to consider my thoughts and share them, I have always tried to carry my own burdens. Even my closest confidant couldn’t be told everything... well, I suppose there’s not much I couldn’t tell you. Especially considering the state of affairs left behind.
I wonder a great many things about that night. I wonder if there has ever been anything I could have changed before we reached the point that I caused all of that devastation and ruined people’s lives. Took their lives. I don’t know how I ended up in that situation, it just got away from me. Everything to do with Olivier got away from me. [ It would be rude to insult Joshua’s mother to his face so he’ll refrain. ]
At times I wonder what my purpose has even been, and considering, I wonder many things about my father. Needless to say, I wasn’t expecting to sit with these thoughts for much longer. Our final battle has been delayed. [ Joshua must know his plans. ]
They sound rather marvellous, I will admit. I happened upon a dagger that is meant to help me find treasure of all things. I’m not entirely sure what I’m meant to do with it, but ah, don’t tell anyone I have that. [ Especially not Cid. ]
I’ll admit my conversations have led me to the same conclusion. I’m concerned about our absence, if I am honest. We had something important to accomplish after all, although I suppose the break will be better for my health in the meantime. [ Not that Joshua should worry about that – ha – ha ]
Thank you for your prompt response. I look forward to your missive as well as an opportunity to meet again.
There isn't a night where I think about how the stars have changed for both of us. If we're being honest with our pens to paper there are often times that I think about that night as well. What we could have done to change the outcome or what would have happened if I had done more or less. I've done that an awful lot in my life, actually.
What I've learned is that no matter our choices we did what we thought was best at the time. You thought you were doing what was best for your family and to put your best step forward for the people of your kingdom. I know it, deeply and sincerely with every fibre of my heart, that is where your thinking and choices lay.
The unfortunate truth is that Ultima had us on his puppet strings from the very beginning. Pullings and pushing us in whatever way he wished. At the time, we had no way of knowing that it was he who had used Olivier. And in a way, my mother as well.
I know the guilt can be palpable. Yet, please believe me when I write the words that if your father were able to see you now he would see a man who had done his best with what he could to protect his people.
If our fathers could see us now. I think they would hope for us to be better men than them. Not to make up for choices made but to make choices for our own.
And perhaps we have that time now... a break in this indescribable journey of ours, to do just that.
I hope you can at least rest easier with your thoughts, Dion. I think of you often in this regard.
It was a pleasure getting to meet with you again. Although our parting had not been very long, it was still long enough that I had missed your company, so the opportunity to spend time with you again was most welcome.
Despite any fears you may have had, you are certainly a formidable dancer and I truly enjoyed dancing with you. I would not be averse to repeating the experience, should we find ourselves at a similar function in the future, provided you are amenable to that.
This discussion of matters of being summoned against our wills has been wildly unusual, but it hasn't happened to me yet, nor does it appear to change out form according to Cid, so that's not so terrible. I spoke with Cid for awhile and he offered me a place on your crew.
I'm not really sure what to make of it. It was after a rather delicate admission on my part that I felt I needed to disclose due to what information he was offering. I'm not entirely sure that it would have happened had we not had that discussion. All the same, I don't know that I should accept.
In any case, I have rambled on long enough. If you have any thoughts, I would like to hear them for I value your opinion and counsel.
I hope, at the very least, that our parting will not be too long.
[It takes Joshua some time to reply this time. Only because of how he felt when Dion sent him this message. He tries to focus on the important things like priming and such but... His mind keeps wandering to the dance they shared and how Dion was happy to be there with him.]
Dear Dion,
Forgive my tardy reply, it took me some time to gather my thoughts. Compliments about my dancing aren't something I'm accustomed to, but I appreciate them nonetheless. Thank you for your kind words.
I had a wonderful time. Perhaps the first time in a very long time that I have been able to relax and have some fun. If you are amenable to it I would be happy to dance with you again at whichever festival comes next with the same opportunity. I still have a lot to learn. But you proved to be quite the formidable leader, yourself.
As for the topic of our priming... I too haven't had anyone pull me away as of yet. I am thankful for that although I think we should still be careful should it happen.
To be honest I am surprised that Cid offered you a position on his crew but all the same I think it would be suiting should you take it. We are all from the same roots, a world where we bonded once and we could do that once again. I think it would be easy.
I'll admit, I would be happy to see you so close. Ultimately, it is up to you.
[ His response is not automatic either, if only because he's often busy with one thing or another during the day and sometimes he waits until night to read his shellphone device. He's always happy to see a missive from Joshua however. ]
Dear Joshua,
You have nothing to apologise for, naturally I cannot expect you to respond immediately nor would I. As we are not in the same room, I am certain you have your own activities going on, as do I. I will admit that I usually don't look at this thing until I'm back in my room at night, preparing for rest.
I would very much like to share another dance with you. It was a very delightful diversion and you are certainly worthy of the praise. I don't think it's necessarily about the talent of a person, or the experience, but as long as it's enjoyable I think that merits my remarks. I had a pleasant time.
There is a small grace, in that being summoned doesn't force priming. I have told the young lady with the ability to potentially bring me to her side that she absolutely must do so if she is in peril and her life is on the line. Inconvenient that may be to me, but I would much rather her survive at my inconvenience than face her death. Especially since priming is not required.
I know it is not proper to discuss this with you through text alone, I certainly owe you better, but my relationship with priming at the moment is tentative at best. Lest you hear it from Cid, but I am afflicted with the curse. That is probably not unique, but the symptoms I have have not changed since arriving here, unlike his assumption that the curse was gone. I cannot say for certain if that is the case, or if it is progressing slower, perhaps it is stopped altogether.
I hadn't any intention on sharing that with him either, but the conversation turned that way and I felt it important to be candid about the situation, because if it is still a factor he should know that. Everyone should, I suppose. I merely don't wish to raise concerns for my health when it is not something that can be altered. However, I have been avoiding priming as much as possible, in the hopes to delay the progression. That isn't something I could've done in Sanbreque of course, but here for the most part, my dragoon skills have been more than enough.
My apologies for the unsolicited tangent, Joshua.
I am uncertain. I appreciate the invitation, and that we are all tied by fate by Greagor's will of course, but aside from my connection to you I have not been so fortunately connected to the others, and I'm not certain why they would wish to be. Most of us share the same burden and yet we have consistently been pit against each other and faced each other in battle and forgiveness is not so easy. Not for me, certainly and probably not for them.
Although I will admit I should stop teasing Cid. I suppose he's earned that much.
I admit you are making a very enticing offer as I too wish to spend more time with you. It would certainly give us more time to talk. I feel as though we get so little of it with everything going on.
Do you think these things can be overcome, or perhaps, I am reading too much into things with my concerns? If it's just me then perhaps I need to spend time letting go of our pasts, difficult that may be.
I just don't wish to make things worse, nor do I wish to make people uncomfortable. I know in my current state that I am not terribly the best company to have around. Perhaps his invitation would be rescinded if he thought he could.
I realize looking over what I've written that I have perhaps said too much...and yet I will selfishly send it all the same and just apologise. Please do not hesitate to tell me if it is too much Joshua. You are my dearest friend and perhaps I have been stewing on my thoughts a little too intensely.
I do hope you'll write me back, and I long to see you again.
I'll have to send my thanks in any way that I can, since you've accepted to be my dance partner, Dion. I couldn't be happier to hear it.
[Goodness, it's embarrassing to even write that... But it's the truth. And even if they are writing on these devices- letters should be truthful.]
As far as our situation goes regarding our priming and the like? There are a few things you aren't alone in. I know it isn't uncommon for us to be afflicted with the curse and as you are, so am I. Although I've gotten used to using my healing magic to keep most of the worst aches and pains at bay. That is, for the most part. If you would amicable to the idea I would be happy to try and ease any aches you might be feeling with my magic. It certainly isn't a cure but temporary relief can be useful.
This brings me to my other point once again regarding Cid's invitation to join his crew. While you might not feel as though you fit in as a puzzle piece would fit into the slot I believe that you most certainly would. For far too long have we all been separated by a world that wished us to be divided. I find the chance for us to work together and be together to be important... Or so, it would be important to me.
Clive may have his habits and be as stony as an unmoving wall but I know he would welcome you with open arms. Just as he did when you came to us in the hideaway, he would be happy to have your trusted aid. Jill too, I'm sure she finds company welcome, as sweet as she is always. And please do not forget how fond Mid is of you. Try to think of the angry unending messages she may send you should you decline the invitation.
[Yes, that is a threat.]
Dion, I hope you don't find my words terribly out of place. But I do find Cid's invitation to be a suitable one. Not only do I trust his judgment of character but I trust my own. You may find yourself displaced in your own thoughts and place in this world and our own but I have always seen you as a light in the darkness, one that places his whole heart in the place that it needs to be. And in this case, I believe you can make the most difference with our circumstances, with us.
And with me. I still mean it, with all my heart and soul, that I wish for you to be there while I search this world for a solution to dissolving Ultima from my body. It would be a comfort knowing you are there. And a comfort knowing I can speak with you and to spend time with you. To make the most of these moments... Is what I think we both need.
I will still leave this decision up to you. But please know that I think you belong with us.
You are my cherished friend. I would not have sought you out as often as I have if I did not think so. Please. Consider it.
I'm very glad to hear that you are happy with my praise, for you earned it and so you should be. I'll keep my eyes and ears open should there be another opportunity to meet for a dance. I don't mean that in a clandestine way, simply looking for an opportunity. Certainly there will be another feast of sorts again.
I would take you up on that, but only if it would not tax your magic. Injuring yourself to ease my pain just leads you to be in the same position and merely transferring the discomfort from one to the other. I am quite used to handling it, should you not truly be able to. You need not worry. There has been no progression since my arrival, so that is a fortunate thing.
It is true, I can honestly I know people more by reputation than anything. I expect they know the same of me. We all share a similar circumstance, and I appreciate the opportunity to get to know people.
I could not turn down such an invitation if it is important to you. You need not threaten me. I am heartened to know that you wish for my company, and I certainly would not deny you that if that is what you wanted.
You have my halberd, and my hand in your search Joshua. Never think otherwise, please.
I believe you might be right. Time together to relax a bit, perhaps to seek some enjoyment would be something I cherish. You are by far my closest friend here. Our time apart was unfortunate, but I was more than relieved to see that you were still alive. I'd had no idea, but I am glad all the same and I would like nothing more than to see you happy.
So, if your happiness is what I wish, and my presence would make you happy, I could hardly deny you. So I shan't. I will inform Cid that I accept, and when things are prepared I look forward to seeing you again much more often.
I supposed it's nothing to keep a mystery. And I assume you are curious after our run-in on Nogard.
Yes, that is correct. The use of my magic comes at a cost, unfortunately. But I do recall you saying something similar about such a thing. May I ask why you are asking?
If you spoke with someone who gave you that exact detail, then yes, he is also from my star. You may have been speaking to another Dominant. May I ask which one?
But as you say... I am unfamiliar with using magic in ways that do not require me to use my own aether aside from the tattoo magic we've received here. You know of a way? You did mention a friend of yours.
Another Dominant. Implying there is more than one here. The one I was speaking to introduced himself as Dion. Don't be mistaken, Joshua, 'tis not unheard of for individuals even on my star to offer up their body's aether alongside prayers to take a primal's shape.
Not one as so grand as Bahamut, but
I digress. Aether can be channeled from sources outside the body. Most mages make use of a rod or a staff to focus the channeling process, but the atmosphere provides the aether. Not one's body.
So it was Dion. I'm not surprised that he found someone to speak to considering the matter of Dominants and their aether. He's often conflicted about the use of his own eikon. Although, for more than that reason alone.
Yes. He is technically the only dominant in command of Bahamut's power on my star. As I am with Phoenix.
[Surprise.]
I've not come across anything that would allow me to command my own aether let alone the power of the Phoenix with a weapon or stave before. Or am I not understanding?
I suppose I should explain myself. If I seem to know of your Dominants. At least two that I have heard of. The individual that I spoke of that used their aether? Though this person has since returned to the star, the primal that they summoned was Shiva.
My friend was actually well known for felling primals. Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda especially.
[ Surprise ]
I should think it is possible, with a little direction. It wouldn't only be with fire, though I suppose that would come more naturally.
While primal is not the same term I would use it would seem our stars have more in common than I first realized. While similar I'm hesitant to consider an eikon and a primal to be the same thing.
I am familiar with the Dominant which has the power of each of those titles.
Although, there is no reason to take their lives. If you please. Since Ifrit is my brother and Shiva my found sibling.
[There might just be a thinly veiled threat to not hurt them, there. Very thin.]
I do thank you for your thoughts, though. Do you consider this method to be purely outside aether or still using our own?
Even that term, "eikon" has been used before upon my star. I don't presume to say that they are one in the same, for I know not how one becomes a Dominant. A primal is created through prayer and a significant amount of aether. They become whatever prayers are poured into them.
[ Ah. He can hear the threat. His brother Ifrit and another close to him being Shiva. There's also persons that host Garuda and Titan. Interesting. ]
Though suffice to say, that method puts a strain on the star. Your family likely doesn't enslave the minds of others in order to maintain worship and prayers flowing, correct? Hardly a reason to be concerned.
Now I would like to speak more about such things, if only to compare just how similar the essences are. For now, though, the method I speak of was how I cast a curative spell upon your hand.
[Joshua is very open to learning about G'raha's version of eikons and primals. He's just not too kind to hear that G'raha's friend had killed them. Forgive him for being protective of such things.]
I see. Therefore the method and the execution of using an eikon are entirely different. Thank you for clarifying. Dominants are chosen by their eikon and awaken during pivotal points of their lives. At least in most cases. I awakened to the Phoenix shortly after I was born.
And I do not and have not ever put anyone under mind control, for that matter. Nor has any other Dominant. We are not people bound by this sort of worship.
That is reassuring.
[Now that that's cleared up...]
I would be interested in learning more about how you control your aether to use your magic in comparison to mine. If you would be free some time and amenable to it, G'raha?
I thought that might be the case, given that Dion described it as almost being one and the same with the eikon. Still, knowing that it takes a toll on your body in such a way and realizing that you woke to it so young... I truly
No, that isn't quite correct. I do know of something that slowly consumes one in exchange for power.
Though yes. I am amenable and it isn't as though we are not on the same ship, hmm?
That is often the case, yes. And if you are speaking about your crystal sickness as you did before, I am sorry. It seems our worlds have a perchance for putting clauses on great power if we choose that power or not.
Then we agree, if we could meet sometime on deck or on the shore of Nogard, I do not mind.
The crystallization of my physical body was not due to my natural ability to channel aether. I had bound myself to a structure in exchange for limitless aether and power. In doing so, I was able to live for an absurd amount of time.
If only to see a task completed.
When we meet, I will speak more of it. I did make that promise, did I not?
Joshua will receive a rather... Unusually large package.
First, will be a sack of fresh carrots, followed by a small carrot shaped pillow.
Beneath all that, are some books that he should enjoy. There's a bit of everything from classic fiction, to more adventurous, and some more informational like about the culture and history of this world. There is even a carrot bookmark—and a normal bookmark.
There is an orange card included.]
Joshua,
So I heard you were a fan of carrots?
[Does he know the truth forever a mystery.]
Thought you might like these books, so enjoy them with a nice snack.
[Definitely can be read as with a carrot—]
I know it hasn't been too long since we've met, but I certainly consider you as one of my own, so if you ever need anything, don't forget you can always ask for help. Especially since I might be more open minded than your brother.
I also hope you've been taking this chance to live in a way you couldn't back in Valisthea. No matter how brief or long our stay is, you shouldn't waste this opportunity.
[ It actually worked, and there Joshua is on his shellphone as he lives and breathes wherever he happens to be at the moment. He's very cute.
Dion coughs lightly to shake his mind back on topic. ]
Can you hear me Joshua?
[ He is not in his night clothes, but he is dressed down, the armor's all been removed and he's just in his frilled underclothes, like he will be getting ready for bed soon. ]
[Joshua is so caught off guard that the strings on his shirt collar are undone, perhaps showing a hint of his dark mark underneath. But he pays it no mind since it's not bothering him at the moment. His strawberry hair is dishevelled and messy.]
Dion... Yes, I can hear and see you. [An amused little smile appears on his face as he tilts the phone to a better position.] And you me? Where did you learn this little trick?
[Joshua certainly cannot stop the moment of fondness he feels the second Dion realizes he's partially lost his manners. He lets out a soft chuckle for it.]
I am well. Perhaps more so now that I know this such thing is a possibility. I will have to thank Lady Benedikta for showing it to you.
Well, I can certainly say we took care of that meddlesome goose. I'm certain it just came back to life again, but it was thoroughly satisfying after Lady Benedikta and I were bested the first time. Wicked creature.
[Whether he'll be there to open the door or not, Rin has dropped something off at his door. It's neatly packed with a ribbon on the top of the box to keep it secured for him, along with a little note that's attached to the box.]
Joshua,
I thought you might want some extra clothing. It's not for exploring though, mainly for lounging around and walking through Eltrut with... Hope you like it though. Don't ask how I got your measurements either, heh.
If you want more clothing, feel free to ask me anytime, kiddo. I'll make you anything you want, so don't be a stranger.
[What a sweet and thoughtful gift. Joshua will accept it gracefully but not without a proper thank you note for her to find in return.]
Dear Rin,
Thank you for the thoughtful gifts. It seems you have a knack for needlework that I wasn't aware of. You'll be happy to know I'll put these to good use.
I hope you know that if you ever need anything in return that I can help with, I'd be happy to provide it.
[ Which means that the shellphone becomes silent. After a period of time, Joshua will find his door slipping open of its own accord. Yet there is no one in sight
But that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone there. ]
Do not let my captain hear word of that. I fear he'll set up even more defensive traps.
[And he would........ Never challenge an engineer.
Meanwhile, Joshua is sitting on his bed and resting as usual. The windows are open because he wants the fresh air. The room smells of light apothecary herbs, medicine and fresh flowers. Joshua does have fresh bandages on as well. He's skimming a book.]
As magicks are merely the result of manipulating aether, is it really all that surprising? You merely learn the means to warp it around yourself, similar enough to a glamour, I suppose.
[ He offers Joshua a smile in return. ]
So if you ever feel the need to escape for a moment, I can assist.
[Joshua has never used his aether in such a way. Nor has he thought to. If only he had the intuition and skill to use his aether like that as a child... He may have had a much better childhood.]
It is already impressive that you made it this far without the other members of my crew detecting you. I may not be able to leave my room now but perhaps I will take you up on that in the future.
There is a restricted section in what one would call a library back home. I do not take well to being told there are places I am not allowed. So I merely devised a way to be able to read.
[ So in other words, he has had a lot of practice with this magic. A lot of use has come from it. Plenty of sneaking around to where he is something of an expert. ]
It is good for companions and family to worry so. Yet being contained here is not necessarily the only answer.
After the few times that we've snuck into the paladin's archives... I am not surprised.
[He shakes his head gently. G'raha truly does make a good corsair. The freedom to learn.]
And while I do understand my family's sentiment that I should rest at the moment I know that I will get bored of these walls sooner or later. Fresh air is the best remedy, I find.
[ And this is why he is a Corsair despite his desire to do good. G'raha does a great deal of rule breaking after all. And he is willing to do the same for others. ]
I believe so too. At the very least they could let you go supervised.
Imagine why. I was a little prince that was too sickly to go anywhere on my own. According to my mother, anyway.
[That is why Joshua would rather be free to do what he wants. After years of being coddled and not allowed to play with his brother. He hates being supervised and told what to do.
Seeing you as you are and knowing full well how determined a person you are... Doubtful you were ever that sickly. Though perhaps I am biased, as I value inner strength just as much as I do physical.
[ But yes he does understand how it might make a parent feel. ]
[He'll spare G'raha the information that he has held Phoenix's power since the day he was born, so he has also held the curse along with it. Although, G'raha's words do give him some comfort.]
Thank you, G'raha. That is kind of you to say.
[All he wanted to do was play with his brother and yet... His mother never allowed him to do that.]
What I wouldn't have done to swing swords around with the other boys, yes. I didn't think I was too sickly for that. And in this case, I do hope to get some fresh air sooner than later.
I do not say it out of kindness, but merely how it all appears to me.
[ G'raha assumes that all of those who are to be a Dominant are born with the ability. How long it sleeps within the individual is likely varied. ]
Though I can relate on some level. I never truly got to play overly much with the children where I was born. After being sent to Sharlayan, it became all about academics. Even while doing fieldwork, I was often scolded as I was supposed to be "an observer only."
Seeing you in person does bring me some ease, even if the questions I would ask might... Be a bit of a touchy subject. If you are not up for them, feel free to chase me out.
[ Since, naturally, it has to do with Joshua's condition and how he managed to even bring himself to this state. ]
[ Raha chuckles. He appreciates Joshua more than the other likely knows. ]
You owe me nothing, my friend. I am satiating my own personal curiosity. [ Partially untrue. ] I would ask you questions about your... Guest, as you are aware.
[ G'raha tries his best for those that he cares about. Joshua has become one of those people. A true friend indeed.
He does what he can to not make a face at the dark mark, knowing full well what it is. What it means. Instead, he raises his hand over it as soon as it is exposed. ]
My friend, I truly hope that there is a means for you to escape this. Truly, a start without you in it would just not be as bright.
[It's always bittersweet to hear people say things like that to him. When he has been so ready to die to make this problem vanish all together. But he's thought many times over now that maybe he shouldn't think he has to die as a last resort.]
Whatever comes of this, I will make it through.
[Please help him by patching up his seals. It helps.]
Even worse, I fear. I am a romance novel enthusiast.
[ A chuckle. Then he begins the process of working on that seal. Perhaps pouring a bit of his own aether in there to further alleviate some of the symptoms. To bolster what cannot be an infinite supply. ]
I know what it feels like, to be torn between hope that you never wanted to hold close and desiring to be pragmatic.
[Joshua gives a gentle chuckle. Another thing in common between the two of them. Romance novels.
As the magic begins, Joshua can feel the relief almost immediately. It's like taking an instant painkiller or a medicine that opens up his lungs. He can finally breathe easier, for the moment.]
Thank you, my friend. For your understanding, as well.
[It does make him feel less alone in his decisions.]
Oh? I didn't realize you were out at sea! In that case, I can simply hold onto them until your return. I wouldn't want someone else to get a hold of them before you do.
[He's sure Joshua is joking, but it really does sound like a fun time.]
That's right! There's nothing quite like the thrill of unraveling a good mystery, even fictional ones! And the best authors come up with the most interesting crimes, even if they can also get pretty convoluted and unrealistic. Why do you ask?
I've always had an affinity for puzzles and mysteries! Naturally I was drawn to this genre as a result. I do also work as a detective back home, so that helps.
[ Though it was already well into the late hours of the night, this was something Clive believed could not wait until morning. So apologies if you were asleep Joshua, but the light sound of several knocks upon your door is a clear indication that someone wants you awake! ]
Joshua? [ He will call out, both trying to keep his voice down as to not wake up the other patrons of the Hideaway but also loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door. ]
[Luckily, Joshua is more often than not up late reading. Tonight is much like those nights where he's been tucked into his bedding with a good book. So, the knocking is only a surprise in the sense that his brother seems to be knocking so late.
He gets up and answers the door just as quietly.]
Brother? Is something the matter? It's quite late.
[ Even as he heard the footsteps from the other side of the door Clive could feel his pulse quickening and the pounding of his heart beat wildly against his chest.
No matter the circumstance he was always delighted to see his brother, but this particular night left him in dire need of his company.
And so, as the door opens and the man catches a glimpse of his brother’s confusion, he shifty moves forward to encapsulate the blonde in a tight, wholehearted embrace. ]
No, nothing is wrong. I’ve come with good news, and a question I wish to ask you.
My apologies, but this was something I couldn't hold off until the morning. [ He does have a halfway sympathetic look on his face for throwing himself at his brother the way he did so late, but this was important!! So much so that Clive will simply just come out and say it.
He pulls back just enough so that his eyes meet Joshua's, his hands in turn placed on either of his shoulders. ]
[Once the hug is finished, Joshua happily pats his brother's shoulders. He is a beaming little brother right now. This is such great news! He may not even be able to sleep tonight!]
I knew that the two of you would find the right time to make it official. Slow as you might be, being careful and sure it is the right time for you both is important.
[He only half teases about the slow part.]
And? Any plans after this, or are you to enjoy the blissful life of an engaged man for a while first?
[ Clive's face will scrunch up at the "slow" part, and will rightfully give his brother a firm pat on the shoulders in return. Maybe even a gentle shove, too. ]
We've no plans for a proper date. Not until we've finished another important task at hand.
[ He's referring to that, Joshua. They were a step closer, but not yet. ]
I mean to fully put an end to an all before we can move forward.
[Joshua lets out a small, soft chuckle. But he does give his brother a more serious look after that.]
Brother... I hope you know that I don't expect you to put your life on hold for me. Not any more than you already have.
[He does not want Clive to hold his life for his. He's done that enough. But also... He knows that this is important to Clive as well. So, he nods and respects that choice.]
But, thank you. I am certain we will be through this soon as well.
[ You can't expect him to not put everything on hold for Joshua. It was in his nature- every fiber that holds him together was always for another person. ]
You are important to me... both you and Jill.
[ He does attempt a small smile. ]
I should have you well and whole to help me with any preparations needed.
[And because he knows that his brother is Like That Joshua picks not to be stubborn and fight his brother on it. He knows that Clive would do anything for him and he loves his brother very much for being such a wonderful brother to him. That steady, protective, unwavering, caring brother.]
As you and Jill are, to me.
[That is also why he hopes that Clive and Jill chase their peace. They most certainly deserve it. And he wants them to have every single moment that they can.]
We do have a lot of preparations to think of in the meantime. [And knowing his brother...] Nothing grand, I assume? Although, there is one request I hope to make as your little brother.
Something small. Simple. [ Knowing his brother, indeed. He knew if he was back home the Hideaway would have thrown a giant party for the two of them, but here? He would rather have those memories from home tucked away into a small pocket of the ceremony. ]
A request? Anything at all. [ Like he would deny his brother something that he specifically asked for!! It was rare for him to ask for something in the first place, so Clive was a little curious... ]
[Joshua gives a knowing smile. He had a feeling his brother would say that. Although, he's sure that his father would have loved to throw a decent and lavish celebration for Clive and Jill...]
I request that you wear Rosarian colours and dress.
[His smile turns soft but his voice is very hopeful.]
While we may have to do our best to find a tailor that can go off our memory alone... I'd hoped that you would look like the Rosarian prince that you are.
That was... a little surprising to hear. Clive pauses, his stature both startled and softening at the same time. ]
Joshua...
[ His days as a dukeling had long since passed, feeling as if it was from another lifetime ago. Clive was an Archduke in ruins alone, a city crushed under the fans of war. It was difficult to imagine himself as anything close to royalty.
Yet he was proud of where he came from. He was proud to be a First Shield and the memories of his life in Rosaria, albeit treacherous at times, clung tightly to his chest. ... He also knew his father would have most certainly been proud of the woman he chose to spend the rest of his days with.
So perhaps this was a request he could accept, after all. ]
Hard for me to protest when you ask so little of me. [ He shifts under his weight slightly, fending off any lingering feelings of unworthiness, before sighing. ]
[While those days are long gone and Joshua was still just a boy, he often thinks about what their lives could have been like. Had Rosaria stood and their father passed down his duties to the both of them. While Clive and Joshua had never had issues with the succession, even as a boy Joshua had always thought that ... While he had Phoenix, that Clive still would have made a better leader than he would have. The soldiers always loved Clive, wanted to see him grow strong... And Joshua was always just a small boy to be cared for. He never had time to see it further than that.
Had they had time to flourish and grow into men inside Rosaria's walls... while Joshua would have been the duke by name, and Clive would still have been his shield- Clive was always a Rosfield son first. Royalty.
He wants Clive to feel that claim on his wedding day. He wants the spirit of their father, stars away, to know it too.]
I promise that is all that I will request. [He chuckles softly.] Anything after that, I leave to you and Jill.
[And he is very much looking forward to whatever way they wish to celebrate.]
[ Despite being the eldest son, the torch (both theoretically and physically) was never his to hold. Clive had not been bestowed with the Phoenix's birthright, and had been ostracized by this mother because of it. Yet if they were to go back in time, if the Founder had wielded another attempt, Clive would not think to have the roles reserved.
Joshua would have been a great leader. A strong, grounded and kind force much like their father before them. His brother may not have seen it, with eyes clouded in self deprecation, but Clive could. He could see how straight his back always was, the fierceness in his determination, and the love that he felt for all of Rosaria. Though still young in age, the responsibilities Joshua shouldered aged him significantly... a significance that perhaps was placed upon him too early.
Yet that was where Clive came in. He would be the one to lift Joshua from his burdens, to be his Shield. So that even if in another timeline entirely where his brother would claim the duke's title, he would never be at it alone. That was something their father had always intended for- for them to be together.
What would he think if they saw them today? Would be just as proud as he was before? All those thoughts ran through Clive's head thinking to the traditional garb of wedding ceremonies, and there was a small part of him that became more comfortable in the idea. That perhaps some part of their father would live through him in those moments... ]
Are you sure? No requests for flower arrangements or centerpieces? [ He smirks, giving Joshua one last attempt to get his needs out there!! ]
[ He chuckles again, the lightheartedness filling the room like a warm embrace. ]
That is all I could ever ask for. [ And all he's ever wanted. To have Joshua be by his side on his most important day meant everything in the world to him, and he thanked the Founder for this second chance. ]
But you should try to sleep. I'm sure these books tire of their spines being open for too long. [ He says, glancing over Joshua's shoulder and onto the stack of material about. He would ask if it was for his book club or another, but that was a conversation for another time. ]
In the heart of a kingdom called Rosaria, where the stars whispered secrets to those who would listen, there lived a magnificent creature known as the Phoenix. But this Phoenix was no ordinary bird of fire; it was a being of great power, born from the flames of rebirth and destruction. Its feathers shimmered with all the colours of the sun, and its cry could make the earth tremble and the skies themselves dance.
Long ago, the Phoenix’s bright flame was passed down to the people. Its fire was a gift, one that could heal and destroy in equal measure. The Phoenix brought warmth to those in need, and yet, when its fiery wings unfurled, entire kingdoms could be reduced to ash.
But the Phoenix's flame was not just destructive; it was a symbol of hope for Rosaria. For in the ashes it left behind, new life would sprout, and from the fire’s core, a new future would rise. It was the eternal cycle—life born of death, death born of life.
That flame took root inside the sons of Rosaria's royal family. Meant to be the kingdom's protector and wielder of that flame. Destine to be reborn time and time again to continue the Phoenix's gift.
[ Nimona does her best to actually read the story, but gives up after the first little paragraph - instead swapping it to read out loud to her. So it takes a few minutes before she responds again. ]
Okay, that's a pretty metal story. But does that mean there's someone out there who plays host to the Phoenix and even if he dies, he just gets brought back to life?
Like, even if there's nothing left of his body, he'll just get reborn again?
[ Even through text, the questions and answers somehow seem important to Nimona. ]
[Well, he did say it was going to be a long story... And he even gave the condensed version of it. He omitted a lot of important details!]
A pretty "metal" story? I'm sorry, I don't understand that phrasing... What about it is... about metal?
And that interpretation is close to correct. While the Phoenix is able to survive a great deal of damage, the current manifestation cannot be reborn from death. Instead, the Phoenix chooses to awaken in the another generation.
[He understands. Maybe he'll start trying to use this new expression.]
Unfortunately, the Phoenix that I know does not have the same immortality as most stories and legends might say. Death is an ending and is final, in my world.
Yeah, I kinda got that from the crazy god talk he told me. It was over text, so I wasn't really near him.
I learned he was a dragon, too! I wanted to go flying together, but he told me what happens when they change. It sucks that they can't really use it for fun.
Yeah, I knew he was a dragon... and if I remember right, Bahamut is the Warden of Light. Cid is lightning, Benedikta is probably wind. Odin is darkness.
Phoenix is fire. The water one was lost. Ifrit is "God's vessel". I think the only ones I haven't really met are earth and ice now.
[ She technically talked to Jill a long time ago. ]
That Odin guy was chatty, the rest I just kind of picked up after all the time we've been here. But I kind of prefer people like Cid and Dion, honestly. I even think of Cid as my uncle!
Well, I'm Nimona. Shape-shifter extraordinaire. If I had a business card, that's what I'd put on it.
Yep! I've got two OP forms (that's Over-Powered). One is a dragon and the other is a phoenix.
You're part of Cid's crew, right? I've seen you around when I come to visit him.
Probably because I'm the only one around, as far as I know. Oh yeah, lots of power. I can turn into almost every animal, or even look like different people. Handy for sneaking around. So if you ever need someone to slip through a crack or something, I'm the shape-shifter for the job!
Cid and I have have been talking about me painting all of the Eikons somewhere. Either on your ship or island. I'm a very good artist, if I say so myself.
[ But she's not going to ask them all to change just so she can take a picture. ]
Uncle Cidbeard and I have been planning it for a bit, so I think he's gonna give me some sketches. But you can also all pitch in and give me descriptions!
[ Maybe she can make a caricature of them for funsies. ]
Hello and warm wishes! I've heard that the past few months have been quite exciting for you, to be it lightly! I very much hope that things have quieted down for you since and that you've managed to find the time relax. Well, I hope this gift helps make things a little brighter than before!
Happy Holidays,
Santa Claus
[Joshua's gift are two books. One on the histories of Escordvi, and the other one on its geography and various cultures!
Also, he gets a stuffed seagull. It's soft and huggable.]
[Inside a box wrapped in red paper, Joshua will find several different blends of tea - clearly labeled with things like "for help sleeping" and "for staying awake" and the like. There is, in addition, a very carefully wrapped blue glass jar. Its label reads "For Energy." And there's a note!
Figured you weren't likely to get too cold, but there's nothing like the comfort of a hot cup of tea anyways! If you're feeling too worn out, put a spoon of the stuff in the blue jar in your tea and you should perk right up. We don't have a holiday like this one, but I've really enjoyed choosing what to give my friends. Thanks for being one of them. -Alfyn]
text; sometime dated to early-mid jan /waves hands
Well, we talked about things a little first. Agreed that maybe we were both a bit hesitant to really start anything because... you know. Things the way they are here. Said that we were going to try and see how they went, and that we both wanted the same thing.
But we were on his boat after we spent the day together and we finally kissed!
[She's blushing just typing the words!!! Covering her face with her hands now.]
At last! The climax to the story, sealed with a kiss!
I'm more than happy to hear that, Tifa. Like I said before, you only had to find the right moment of time for the both of you.
I think it's only fair to feel as hesitant as you were. Allowing ourselves to venture through something like love and affection when any of us could return through a rift at any give time is a risk. But I truly think it is a risk that is worth taking.
[He doesn't regret falling in love with Dion even if that time is gone now. It's an experience he will always treasure.]
I think that was the scary part, you know? The fact that either one of us could up and disappear at any moment and not remember a thing. But I'm slowly trying to remind myself that we can't just sit around and wait for that to happen. It's been over a year, and I'm tired of living in fear of that, if that makes sense.
It makes perfect sense. Months ago, my brother and I promised each other that we would always chase our peace here in this world, no matter what would or wouldn't happen. You should too.
Now, does this mean I might have a chance to meet this man that swept my dear friend off her feet, soon?
I haven't even told him that I was telling anyone, but I needed to get it off my chest! But I suppose you could meet him soon enough. Once we figure out what's even going on.
Thanks, Joshua. And thanks for listening. Feels good to finally be able to tell someone. I'm a little scared the crew's gonna make a bigger deal out of it than they need to.
I'm sure they would be. Wouldn't be surprised if they had a party just for the sake of having a reason to invite him over. But I never was great at being the center of attention for anything. Though I guess I could try and swing it in a different direction.
[Joshua’s going to get an unexpected gift one of these days. A leather-bound notebook along with a big, red feather strapped on top of it. There’s also a quill attached. There’s no letter from who it’s from.]
Not what I ever wanted to hear at this age, but I'm sure they're going to be gorgeous.
Anyway, the problem. There are no real aeries here for her to nest in. You've been here a while so I figure you know where there is a place that's kind of isolated but also up high.
That's kind of what I'm - we're - needing. A place that can stay relatively dry, stable temperature, and has enough space for her and I to make for a soft laying area.
So if your captain or anyone you know, really, has a good idea of that I'm all ears. At most there'll only be two eggs so it's not like we're going to be drowning in wyverns.
Although, if The Roost proves to be unsuitable there is the Cosmo Canyon Conservatory, I hear they tend to take in any creatures should they need refuge.
Two egg, though. That is still quite the handful for a new grandfather.
Oh don't tell me that. I can come up with a lot of different things that would be appropriate, Joshua.
At least you telling me I look pretty young softens the blow. I am still pretty young with no plans on being a grandfather for at least another twenty-five or more years. At least.

Nope. A bunch of people make these witty jokes and then other people can freely use them. So feel free to pass the joke on!

I'll have to pass it on to my brother to see his reaction.

All of the best,
Dion Lesage.

Dear Dion,
It's a relief to know that the tea has been serving you well.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you again,
Joshua Rosfield.

I have not forgotten I have promised you a drink.

Joshua.

Dion

Dear Dion,
Forgive my tardy reply, it took me some time to gather my thoughts.
Let's speak again soon,
Joshua.
no subject
Dion

Yours,
Joshua.

I look forward to seeing you again,
Dion

This message is likely a bit of a surprise, but I admit that this has been on my mind recently.
Your hand... Is it the result of using magic?
no subject
Hello, G'raha.
I supposed it's nothing to keep a mystery. And I assume you are curious after our run-in on Nogard.
Yes, that is correct. The use of my magic comes at a cost, unfortunately. But I do recall you saying something similar about such a thing. May I ask why you are asking?
no subject
Thus I wished to confirm this with you. If this was the case with yourself, that is.
Hearing that, I grew concerned. There are other means of using magic that does not require one's own aether to do so.
no subject
But as you say... I am unfamiliar with using magic in ways that do not require me to use my own aether aside from the tattoo magic we've received here. You know of a way? You did mention a friend of yours.
no subject
Not one as so grand as Bahamut, but
I digress. Aether can be channeled from sources outside the body. Most mages make use of a rod or a staff to focus the channeling process, but the atmosphere provides the aether. Not one's body.
no subject
Yes. He is technically the only dominant in command of Bahamut's power on my star. As I am with Phoenix.
[Surprise.]
I've not come across anything that would allow me to command my own aether let alone the power of the Phoenix with a weapon or stave before. Or am I not understanding?
no subject
I suppose I should explain myself. If I seem to know of your Dominants. At least two that I have heard of. The individual that I spoke of that used their aether? Though this person has since returned to the star, the primal that they summoned was Shiva.
My friend was actually well known for felling primals. Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda especially.
[ Surprise ]
I should think it is possible, with a little direction. It wouldn't only be with fire, though I suppose that would come more naturally.
no subject
I am familiar with the Dominant which has the power of each of those titles.
Although, there is no reason to take their lives. If you please. Since Ifrit is my brother and Shiva my found sibling.
[There might just be a thinly veiled threat to not hurt them, there. Very thin.]
I do thank you for your thoughts, though. Do you consider this method to be purely outside aether or still using our own?
no subject
For now, though, the method I speak of was how I cast a curative spell upon your hand.
no subject
If you would be free some time and amenable to it, G'raha?
no subject
No, that isn't quite correct. I do know of something that slowly consumes one in exchange for power.
Though yes. I am amenable and it isn't as though we are not on the same ship, hmm?
no subject
Then we agree, if we could meet sometime on deck or on the shore of Nogard, I do not mind.
no subject
If only to see a task completed.
When we meet, I will speak more of it. I did make that promise, did I not?
no subject
I do look forward to it.
🎀
In any case, come fine me whenever you feel up to trying out my theory.
< winterstide gift >
Enjoy the carrots.

Cursed? Really?

no subject
[No, he knows exactly what is wrong with the video and why it's disturbing but he pretends otherwise.]
no subject
I'm sure anyone my age would come up with something a little less cursed. Or so I would hope.
no subject

Hmm. Alright. I'll do it.

Especially Clive. Lad could use a bit more humor.
no subject
But I'll consider it anyway.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you wouldn't mind seeing a bit of chaos.

no subject
[Yes, Dad fully endorses this. Prank away, Joshua.]
no subject
[Well, twist his rubber arm.]
no subject
Hah, a fine Corsair you're turning out to be.
[Written with an amused grin.]

[He is smiling too. He appreciates you, Cid.]

Now let me know what you find and how it goes.

But luckily he's a lot more savvy at picking up these sorts of things than some people he knows... He answers the call easily enough.]
... Dion?
[Sorry. He's in his night clothes.]
no subject
Dion coughs lightly to shake his mind back on topic. ]
Can you hear me Joshua?
[ He is not in his night clothes, but he is dressed down, the armor's all been removed and he's just in his frilled underclothes, like he will be getting ready for bed soon. ]
I can see you. [ He advises. ] Can you see me?
no subject
Dion... Yes, I can hear and see you. [An amused little smile appears on his face as he tilts the phone to a better position.] And you me? Where did you learn this little trick?
[Look at them go, tech masters.]
no subject
I mean, good evening Joshua. How are you? [ Dion is a little flustered. His manners... ]
In fact, Lady Benedikta showed me how to do this the other day.
[ Yeah...that has apparently stuck... ]
no subject
I am well. Perhaps more so now that I know this such thing is a possibility. I will have to thank Lady Benedikta for showing it to you.
[He tilts the camera just a little.]
These devices are a wonder.
no subject
I figured perhaps a conversation wouldn't be amiss, provided you aren't too occupied.
no subject
[He just can't say no to that smile. Honestly.]
Then what shall we speak about? Monsters you've slain recently? Magic you've tussled with? Like this, we have the world.
no subject
Well, I can certainly say we took care of that meddlesome goose. I'm certain it just came back to life again, but it was thoroughly satisfying after Lady Benedikta and I were bested the first time. Wicked creature.
no subject
[He can't believe it!]
In that case, revenge must have been sweet.
no subject
[ Both of them lost their temper. ]
It certainly was.
no subject
Oh, how the dominants haven fallen. To a goose of all things.
[Okay, he's teasing just a little.]
That will be a tale to remember.
no subject
I certainly wish you would not.
no subject
I'll be sure to write about it in my memoirs, I'm very sorry Dion.
no subject
[ Last thing he needs is a song about him being defeated by a goose. ]
no subject
I only tease. You are still the fearsome dragon I've come to know.
[A goose will not hinder him.]
no subject
[ He answers in an equal measure of humour. ]
no subject
[He lets out another soft laugh.]
no subject
[ A gentle pause. ] Perhaps you would indulge me with a call again some other time?
no subject
Of course, Dion. I would indulge a call with you at any time.
action/delivery
Joshua,
I thought you might want some extra clothing. It's not for exploring though, mainly for lounging around and walking through Eltrut with... Hope you like it though. Don't ask how I got your measurements either, heh.
If you want more clothing, feel free to ask me anytime, kiddo. I'll make you anything you want, so don't be a stranger.
Well wishes,
Rin.
no subject
Dear Rin,
Thank you for the thoughtful gifts. It seems you have a knack for needlework that I wasn't aware of. You'll be happy to know I'll put these to good use.
I hope you know that if you ever need anything in return that I can help with, I'd be happy to provide it.

no subject
Hello, G'raha. I'm available if you need something. What is it?
no subject
no subject
[He thinks he's being sort of funny.]
no subject
Are you in need of a visitor who can slip in and out unnoticed?
no subject
no subject
[ Which means that the shellphone becomes silent. After a period of time, Joshua will find his door slipping open of its own accord. Yet there is no one in sight
But that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone there. ]
no subject
[And he would........ Never challenge an engineer.
Meanwhile, Joshua is sitting on his bed and resting as usual. The windows are open because he wants the fresh air. The room smells of light apothecary herbs, medicine and fresh flowers. Joshua does have fresh bandages on as well. He's skimming a book.]
Curious.
no subject
no subject
[Ghosts? He jolts quickly and scoots back...??]
Hello?
no subject
no subject
[He frowns although it's more of a pout!]
No more tricks, where are you?! Had you told me you were a ghost I would have reconsidered your offer today!
no subject
Now now, we can't have you reconsidering, now can we?
no subject
no subject
[ He offers Joshua a smile in return. ]
So if you ever feel the need to escape for a moment, I can assist.
no subject
[Joshua has never used his aether in such a way. Nor has he thought to. If only he had the intuition and skill to use his aether like that as a child... He may have had a much better childhood.]
It is already impressive that you made it this far without the other members of my crew detecting you. I may not be able to leave my room now but perhaps I will take you up on that in the future.
no subject
[ So in other words, he has had a lot of practice with this magic. A lot of use has come from it. Plenty of sneaking around to where he is something of an expert. ]
It is good for companions and family to worry so. Yet being contained here is not necessarily the only answer.
no subject
After the few times that we've snuck into the paladin's archives... I am not surprised.
[He shakes his head gently. G'raha truly does make a good corsair. The freedom to learn.]
And while I do understand my family's sentiment that I should rest at the moment I know that I will get bored of these walls sooner or later. Fresh air is the best remedy, I find.
[He's a bird, after all.]
no subject
[ And this is why he is a Corsair despite his desire to do good. G'raha does a great deal of rule breaking after all. And he is willing to do the same for others. ]
I believe so too. At the very least they could let you go supervised.
no subject
I'm not sure if I wish that either. I've been supervised most of my life.
[Let him be freeeeee.]
no subject
[ Responsible? Reckless, is really the word that G'raha would use. Who ever would think to use themselves to contain an immortal entity?
...Aside from himself, if needed of course. ]
no subject
Imagine why. I was a little prince that was too sickly to go anywhere on my own. According to my mother, anyway.
[That is why Joshua would rather be free to do what he wants. After years of being coddled and not allowed to play with his brother. He hates being supervised and told what to do.
And yes. He's reckless.]
no subject
[ But yes he does understand how it might make a parent feel. ]
no subject
Thank you, G'raha. That is kind of you to say.
[All he wanted to do was play with his brother and yet... His mother never allowed him to do that.]
What I wouldn't have done to swing swords around with the other boys, yes. I didn't think I was too sickly for that. And in this case, I do hope to get some fresh air sooner than later.
no subject
[ G'raha assumes that all of those who are to be a Dominant are born with the ability. How long it sleeps within the individual is likely varied. ]
Though I can relate on some level. I never truly got to play overly much with the children where I was born. After being sent to Sharlayan, it became all about academics. Even while doing fieldwork, I was often scolded as I was supposed to be "an observer only."
no subject
Perhaps that is the route of our relentlessly adventurous sides.
[All work and no play... Has made them stubborn. Let the curious nerds out.]
no subject
Yes, I suppose that this side of us developed due to those circumstances. In truth, I was wondering how you were faring.
no subject
I am faring better than it looks, I do promise that.
[Phoenix's healing is doing wonders.]
no subject
[ Since, naturally, it has to do with Joshua's condition and how he managed to even bring himself to this state. ]
no subject
[Joshua looks at G'raha and nods.]
I suppose I do owe a friend some answers. Please ask what you wish and I'll do my best to answer what I can.
no subject
You owe me nothing, my friend. I am satiating my own personal curiosity. [ Partially untrue. ] I would ask you questions about your... Guest, as you are aware.
[ G'raha looks towards the door. ]
What were the conditions to ensure confinement?
no subject
The strength of my Eikon and of my aether. While I may be weaker at the moment, my guest is locked away tightly once again.
[And he thinks... That he cannot afford to let Ultima almost escape a second time.]
no subject
[ His smile is kind. Fond. Also a bit empathetic. To contain a being such as Ultima - from what he has heard - would take no small amount of aether. ]
Though I suppose that means no wards, spells, or seals are in place?
no subject
[Joshua once again gives another weak but determined (and stubborn) smile.]
Although, I do recall you using your own magic to reinforce my seals once. Would you care to help a friend once again?
[One can never be to careful, after all.]
no subject
I will be glad to offer my aid to a dear friend, whenever he should call upon me to do so.
[ His chin points towards Joshua's chest. Asking the other to expose the inky blotch, the prison of his friend's enemy. ]
no subject
[Joshua nods quietly. In all his life, he has not had the time or opportunity to make many true friends. He is glad to call G'raha one of them.
With that, he reaches up to gently tug away some of his bandages, revealing the dark mark.]
no subject
He does what he can to not make a face at the dark mark, knowing full well what it is. What it means. Instead, he raises his hand over it as soon as it is exposed. ]
My friend, I truly hope that there is a means for you to escape this. Truly, a start without you in it would just not be as bright.
no subject
I wasn't aware you were a poet as well, G'raha.
It helps.]
no subject
[ A chuckle. Then he begins the process of working on that seal. Perhaps pouring a bit of his own aether in there to further alleviate some of the symptoms. To bolster what cannot be an infinite supply. ]
I know what it feels like, to be torn between hope that you never wanted to hold close and desiring to be pragmatic.
🎀
As the magic begins, Joshua can feel the relief almost immediately. It's like taking an instant painkiller or a medicine that opens up his lungs. He can finally breathe easier, for the moment.]
Thank you, my friend. For your understanding, as well.
[It does make him feel less alone in his decisions.]
text;
I've just finished a few more mystery novels. If you're interested, I can bring them to you to add to your book club resources. :)
no subject
It is good to hear from you.
I am interested although I'm afraid I won't be returning to Eltrut for a few weeks yet.
Hmm. Do you care to leave them somewhere I might find them?
no subject
[Beware of mail thieves, Joshua. BEWARE.]
no subject
[He's only joking.]
You said before that you enjoy mystery novels the most, is that right?
no subject
[He's sure Joshua is joking, but it really does sound like a fun time.]
That's right! There's nothing quite like the thrill of unraveling a good mystery, even fictional ones! And the best authors come up with the most interesting crimes, even if they can also get pretty convoluted and unrealistic. Why do you ask?
no subject
[He thinks he's being very creative.]
And I was only interested as I've not read many books like that, myself. They seem thrilling. How did you get into such a genre?
no subject
I've always had an affinity for puzzles and mysteries! Naturally I was drawn to this genre as a result. I do also work as a detective back home, so that helps.
no subject
[What is a pirate world without a little buried treasure for others to find?]
I see, a mind for puzzles and mysteries. What exactly is a detective, if I might ask?
[Are there detectives in his high fantasy world back home?? Probably not???]
action;
Joshua? [ He will call out, both trying to keep his voice down as to not wake up the other patrons of the Hideaway but also loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door. ]
no subject
He gets up and answers the door just as quietly.]
Brother? Is something the matter? It's quite late.
no subject
No matter the circumstance he was always delighted to see his brother, but this particular night left him in dire need of his company.
And so, as the door opens and the man catches a glimpse of his brother’s confusion, he shifty moves forward to encapsulate the blonde in a tight, wholehearted embrace. ]
No, nothing is wrong. I’ve come with good news, and a question I wish to ask you.
no subject
[Joshua lets out a puff of sleepy laughter. Goodness, his brother is in a fantastic mood. He returns the hug with a few grateful pats.]
Hug me any tighter and I may forget how to breathe. [He smiles.] Good news?
no subject
He pulls back just enough so that his eyes meet Joshua's, his hands in turn placed on either of his shoulders. ]
Jill and I... we are betrothed.
1/2
Truly? Betrothed?
[Of all the things he could hear from his brother, that is the happiest of things. Joshua is sure that he won't be able to get the smile off his face.
Clive and Jill... His two beloved family. How he grew up watching Jill and Clive fall in love. Now, with all the turmoil behind them...
The peace they all yearn for...]
2/2
I believe this is the moment that I say... It is about time!
no subject
It is, isn't it? There were many things we needed to accomplish before I felt it right to ask, but I'm glad I finally did.
no subject
I knew that the two of you would find the right time to make it official. Slow as you might be, being careful and sure it is the right time for you both is important.
[He only half teases about the slow part.]
And? Any plans after this, or are you to enjoy the blissful life of an engaged man for a while first?
no subject
We've no plans for a proper date. Not until we've finished another important task at hand.
[ He's referring to that, Joshua. They were a step closer, but not yet. ]
I mean to fully put an end to an all before we can move forward.
no subject
Brother... I hope you know that I don't expect you to put your life on hold for me. Not any more than you already have.
[He does not want Clive to hold his life for his. He's done that enough. But also... He knows that this is important to Clive as well. So, he nods and respects that choice.]
But, thank you. I am certain we will be through this soon as well.
no subject
You are important to me... both you and Jill.
[ He does attempt a small smile. ]
I should have you well and whole to help me with any preparations needed.
no subject
As you and Jill are, to me.
[That is also why he hopes that Clive and Jill chase their peace. They most certainly deserve it. And he wants them to have every single moment that they can.]
We do have a lot of preparations to think of in the meantime. [And knowing his brother...] Nothing grand, I assume? Although, there is one request I hope to make as your little brother.
no subject
A request? Anything at all. [ Like he would deny his brother something that he specifically asked for!! It was rare for him to ask for something in the first place, so Clive was a little curious... ]
no subject
I request that you wear Rosarian colours and dress.
[His smile turns soft but his voice is very hopeful.]
While we may have to do our best to find a tailor that can go off our memory alone... I'd hoped that you would look like the Rosarian prince that you are.
[Their father would have liked that too...]
no subject
That was... a little surprising to hear.
I will honor your request.
no subject
Had they had time to flourish and grow into men inside Rosaria's walls... while Joshua would have been the duke by name, and Clive would still have been his shield- Clive was always a Rosfield son first. Royalty.
He wants Clive to feel that claim on his wedding day. He wants the spirit of their father, stars away, to know it too.]
I promise that is all that I will request. [He chuckles softly.] Anything after that, I leave to you and Jill.
[And he is very much looking forward to whatever way they wish to celebrate.]
no subject
no subject
Clive's remark has him letting out a soft chuckle.]
Flowers and centrepieces? That is far beyond my knowledge. You will have to find an opinion elsewhere for such things.
[No thanks, he's outtie!!]
I am happy to be by your side on your day, Clive.
[That's all he needs. Whatever his brother needs of him, he'll do it.]
no subject
That is all I could ever ask for. [ And all he's ever wanted. To have Joshua be by his side on his most important day meant everything in the world to him, and he thanked the Founder for this second chance. ]
But you should try to sleep. I'm sure these books tire of their spines being open for too long. [ He says, glancing over Joshua's shoulder and onto the stack of material about. He would ask if it was for his book club or another, but that was a conversation for another time. ]
no subject
I'm not entirely sure how you expect me to sleep a wink now knowing what I know.
[This is too exciting...!!]
Yes, goodnight brother. Tomorrow is a new day.
[And a start to wedding planning!]

That is a very curious question. I shouldn't pick too lightly...
Perhaps a phoenix?
[Is that a cop-out answer?]
no subject
Shhhh, it's nothing! Don't worry about it!
Why a phoenix? Are there a lot of phoenixes in your world?
no subject
Hm. Only one phoenix, actually.
I'm quite fond of the story.
no subject
Tell me the story!
no subject
no subject
no subject
Destine to be reborn time and time again to continue the Phoenix's gift.
no subject
Okay, that's a pretty metal story. But does that mean there's someone out there who plays host to the Phoenix and even if he dies, he just gets brought back to life?
Like, even if there's nothing left of his body, he'll just get reborn again?
[ Even through text, the questions and answers somehow seem important to Nimona. ]
no subject
A pretty "metal" story? I'm sorry, I don't understand that phrasing... What about it is... about metal?
And that interpretation is close to correct. While the Phoenix is able to survive a great deal of damage, the current manifestation cannot be reborn from death. Instead, the Phoenix chooses to awaken in the another generation.
no subject
Metal is slang for "awesome, or amazing" where I'm from.
Why can't the current manifestation be reborn? Did it use up its flames of immortality or something?
no subject
[He understands. Maybe he'll start trying to use this new expression.]
Unfortunately, the Phoenix that I know does not have the same immortality as most stories and legends might say. Death is an ending and is final, in my world.
no subject
[ She is going to have the Hideaway crew using her weird slang. ]
By any chance, is this Phoenix also called an Eikon sometimes?
no subject
no subject
Back in the early days, I asked that Odin guy a lot of questions and got answers I tried not to judge. And then learned some other stuff from Dion.
no subject
As for Dion, I'm sure he told you about Bahamut?
no subject
I learned he was a dragon, too! I wanted to go flying together, but he told me what happens when they change. It sucks that they can't really use it for fun.
no subject
I'm afraid that Dion was correct. While he is the king of dragons, Bahamut, it isn't a power that we can use frivolously.
Actually, I should clarify. Dion is the Dominant of Bahamut. As I am the Dominant of the Phoenix.
no subject
Yeah, I knew he was a dragon... and if I remember right, Bahamut is the Warden of Light. Cid is lightning, Benedikta is probably wind. Odin is darkness.
Phoenix is fire. The water one was lost. Ifrit is "God's vessel". I think the only ones I haven't really met are earth and ice now.
[ She technically talked to Jill a long time ago. ]
But hey, I get a new phoenix buddy!
no subject
Yes, that's right. I am the Phoenix. The eikon dominant over fire.
Buddies, are we?
no subject
Well, I'm Nimona. Shape-shifter extraordinaire. If I had a business card, that's what I'd put on it.
Yep! I've got two OP forms (that's Over-Powered). One is a dragon and the other is a phoenix.
no subject
I've never heard of a shape-shifter extraordinaire, before. You must hold great power if you are both a dragon and a phoenix.
no subject
Probably because I'm the only one around, as far as I know. Oh yeah, lots of power. I can turn into almost every animal, or even look like different people. Handy for sneaking around. So if you ever need someone to slip through a crack or something, I'm the shape-shifter for the job!

[Cid does have a knack for adopting others.]
An incredible gift, indeed. I'll be sure to ask if I am ever in need of a mouse or a lion.
no subject
[ She might have adopted him first. As she does. ]
Or a bug or dragon! Did you phoenix form also get smaller when you got to this world?
no subject
Yes, I did have a smaller form before I was able to regain my full power...
I happened to turn into something very sparrow-like.
no subject
Ooh? How did you regain your full power?
Wait... that's itty-bitty. I just have like a ten-foot maximum size on any of my larger forms.
no subject
Like the others, I was able to regain my full power after a time. I'm no longer, "itty-bitty" I promise you.
[He's a big red bird!!!]
no subject
Awwww! It would have been great to get a picture of you all when you were itty-bitty. If you're all too big, you won't fit in the frame.
no subject
In any case, I'd like to think that my full phoenix form is still very picture-worthy.

Cid and I have have been talking about me painting all of the Eikons somewhere. Either on your ship or island. I'm a very good artist, if I say so myself.
[ But she's not going to ask them all to change just so she can take a picture. ]
no subject
Although, a mural of sort might be interesting. I would suggest painting it somewhere on the island, should it last for years to come.
[A ship can crash or fall apart.]
no subject
I wouldn't mind doing both. Maybe a smaller version on the ship so that someday, when it's just ruins - people can wonder.
no subject
[Which might be kind of... fun.]
That sounds like an excellent idea, my lady.
no subject
[ Maybe she can make a caricature of them for funsies. ]
'm not a lady. Just Nimona.
no subject
That I will. Just Nimona.
Please do tell me when your project is underway.
🎀
Will do! Talk to you then.
[ He will get a text a couple of months later - since October was rough for her.
Things to handwave.]no subject
Hello and warm wishes! I've heard that the past few months have been quite exciting for you, to be it lightly! I very much hope that things have quieted down for you since and that you've managed to find the time relax. Well, I hope this gift helps make things a little brighter than before!
Happy Holidays,
Santa Claus
[Joshua's gift are two books. One on the histories of Escordvi, and the other one on its geography and various cultures!
Also, he gets a stuffed seagull. It's soft and huggable.]
Winterstide Gift
A Winterstide Gift!
-Alfyn]

Or at least, I am hoping that it is. How did it go?
no subject
no subject
no subject
Well. I told him how I felt and it turned out that he was the same. That we both had feelings for each other.
[Which was a relief. She would have run home to hide for a week and never come out.]
We almost kissed under the fireworks too, but you know how in those books when the main couple's about to kiss, and they get interrupted by someone? 💦
no subject
An interruption? How... classic.
Please tell me there was some sort of kiss in the end. Or was that the disaster?
no subject
no subject
And?
no subject
Well, we talked about things a little first. Agreed that maybe we were both a bit hesitant to really start anything because... you know. Things the way they are here. Said that we were going to try and see how they went, and that we both wanted the same thing.
But we were on his boat after we spent the day together and we finally kissed!
[She's blushing just typing the words!!! Covering her face with her hands now.]
no subject
I'm more than happy to hear that, Tifa. Like I said before, you only had to find the right moment of time for the both of you.
I think it's only fair to feel as hesitant as you were. Allowing ourselves to venture through something like love and affection when any of us could return through a rift at any give time is a risk. But I truly think it is a risk that is worth taking.
[He doesn't regret falling in love with Dion even if that time is gone now. It's an experience he will always treasure.]

Now, does this mean I might have a chance to meet this man that swept my dear friend off her feet, soon?
no subject
[And Denji. But that one was purely an accident.]
I haven't even told him that I was telling anyone, but I needed to get it off my chest! But I suppose you could meet him soon enough. Once we figure out what's even going on.
no subject
[He's so happy and proud of her.]
no subject
no subject
It certainly is your own business. Although, I can only assume your crew would be happy for you. Would they not?
no subject
no subject
Take your time with it, Tifa.
no subject
Thanks, Joshua. And as soon as I figure things out with this "party", you'll be the first to know.
no subject
I will be waiting, breath held, to see it unfold.
wrap? c:
I'll talk to you soon, then! Oh, and keep me updated on that new book we picked out. I wanna know all your thoughts on it when you're finished.
🎀
Speak to you soon, my friend.

Let me know if you're interested.
no subject
Khalid? Of course, what do you need?
no subject
[ His wyvern, of course. ]
You remember all those dragons that were looking for mates, right?
no subject
On Ocard. Yes, it was their mating season only last month.
no subject
I wasn't worried because I didn't think that they'd be compatible, but here we are.
Azita needs a place to nest.
no subject
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather, my friend.
[Joshua, please.]
no subject
Anyway, the problem. There are no real aeries here for her to nest in. You've been here a while so I figure you know where there is a place that's kind of isolated but also up high.
no subject
[Joshua has to think...]
The roost has many high mountains and stony plateaus to pick from. Although... we do have families of gryphons that may not like to share the space.
no subject
[ What are those? ]
no subject
[To put it simply...]
no subject
no subject
I can ask my captain if there are any other suitable areas on The Roost. Despite the gryphons, the island is well protected from the elements.
no subject
So if your captain or anyone you know, really, has a good idea of that I'm all ears. At most there'll only be two eggs so it's not like we're going to be drowning in wyverns.
no subject
Although, if The Roost proves to be unsuitable there is the Cosmo Canyon Conservatory, I hear they tend to take in any creatures should they need refuge.
Two egg, though. That is still quite the handful for a new grandfather.
no subject
Not appreciating being called a new grandfather though. Way to make me feel older than I am.

I am sorry, it was simply too hard to resist. Uncle, then.

no subject
I will accept your revenge in whichever form you deem appropriate, Khalid.
To be perfectly fair, you scarcely appear old enough to be a grandfather.
[He's good-looking. Not old!]
no subject
At least you telling me I look pretty young softens the blow. I am still pretty young with no plans on being a grandfather for at least another twenty-five or more years. At least.
no subject
[He chuckles.]
Young looking and with nothing to fret over, then.
no subject
Anyway, I'll owe you one after this.
no subject
And please do not worry, you owe me nothing.

A favour for later, then.
